A look at the vagus nerve's role in child development

Some of it is grounded in real science. A lot of it isn’t. Here’s what we actually know, and why it matters for how we think about care at Three Waters Chiropractic.
What the Vagus Nerve Actually Does
The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, running from the brainstem down through the neck and chest into the abdomen. It’s the primary pathway of the parasympathetic nervous system — the branch responsible for slowing the heart rate, supporting digestion, and helping the body shift out of a stress response and into a state of rest and recovery.
In children, the vagus nerve plays an outsized role. It’s involved in heart rate regulation, digestion, feeding, and — importantly — in a child’s capacity to self-regulate emotionally and socially. Researchers have studied this connection for decades under the umbrella of “vagal tone,” a measurable marker of how the nervous system responds to and recovers from stress.
What the Research Says About Vagal Tone and Kids
Vagal tone isn’t a fringe concept — it’s been studied in developmental psychology and psychophysiology for over 30 years. Higher vagal tone has been linked to more organized physiological responses and a stronger capacity to attend, engage, and self-soothe. Researchers like Dr. Stephen Porges, whose work introduced what’s now called polyvagal theory, have proposed that vagal function underlies a child’s ability to shift between states of alertness, calm, and social connection.
It’s worth being straightforward here: polyvagal theory is influential, but it’s also debated within the scientific community. Some of its broader claims have drawn criticism from researchers who argue the evidence doesn’t fully support them. The narrower, well-established piece — that vagal tone is a real, measurable marker connected to stress response and self-regulation in children — is on much firmer ground than the more sweeping interpretations you’ll sometimes see online.
What Parents Are Often Noticing When They Start Looking Into This
This topic tends to come up when parents are already paying close attention to something in their child’s day-to-day — even if they haven’t put a name to it yet. Some of the things we hear most often:
- Trouble winding down at bedtime or a child who seems “wired but tired”
- Big emotional reactions that seem to take a while to settle
- A child who’s sensitive to noise, textures, or new environments
- Digestive or feeding struggles that don’t have a clear explanation
